Cycles of Clans

We cannot escape from our referents. My work starts from what I am and where I come from. My grandfather and my father work the land, they are peasants, that taste for the countryside is inherited by them. The fact of tilling the land, sowing and harvesting is part of my life, I have seen it since I have use of reason and for me it is important. I enjoy making strokes in the land, creating machines, driving the tractor, walking to measure a land, the earth in my hands.

I face the landscape in its natural form, occasionally affecting and seeking a dialogue with the earth from the experience of work. My tools are my body to explain the machine, test records and actions. The scale of the work is proportional to my body and I support the walk to understand. Work the land is reduce matter to state or suitable form to use it. I’ve seen this at home since I’m right. Always the same every year but every year is so different … What persists is the cycle.

This work is the record of the process, preparation and execution of traces made on three hectares of communal land. These traces are the evolution of patterns and designs prepared in Drawing and projected with the walk, actions with the tractor and records of change of color by the effect of moisture by water irrigation in the field. The terrain is a canvas and I photographically recorded the variations of light, the changes of humidity in the soil, whether induced or natural. The work is divided into phases:

1. Preparation Phase.

Board of 100 x 80 centimeters. The limits are marked by humidity on the ground

Circular board (160 centimeters in diameter) with hidden mechanical means that generate traces underground

It is the pointing, indicating and suggesting the limits what marks the initial interest. He cited one of the references that has crosses at work. Through the body Long measures his own perceptions and the variations of atmospheric agents […] To measure means identifying points, indicating them, aligning them”, circumscribing spaces, alternating them in keeping with a rhythm and a direction.1 I will try to explain it in the experience. My father took me to measure a piece of land to know how much to charge for an agricultural work. It all started by taking a lasso of fifty meters to measure the area of a particular plot. He took one end of the lasso and I the other, so I started walking and leaving marks every time the lasso was finished, I walked back looking for those marks. At the end, he made a small drawing with the calculations of the total area, hectares that resulted from the route with a simple loop. For me, the measure was the forgotten steps, getting lost in my thoughts trying to look for the marks and untying the thread of the land.
Getting lost. “Getting lost means that between us and space there is not only relationship of dominion, of control on the part of the subject, but also the possibility that space can dominate us. There are moments in life in which we learn how to learn from the space around us. [..] We are no longer capable of giving a value, a meaning to the possibility of getting lost. [..] In primitive cultures, on the other hand, if someone never gets lost he never grows up. And this is done in the desert, the forest, places that are a sort of machine though which attain other states consciousness.”2
